A Level Media Studies will teach you to understand the workings of your immediate world, and your individual place in it. Because the media is a major source of modern culture and entertainment, Media Studies is a contemporary subject which is relevant to all our lives.

You will study a wide range of different media which include advertising and marketing, newspapers, film radio, video games, TV, magazines and online media. You will be expected to think independently and to develop your own voice, and to expand your knowledge outside of the classroom through reading and through engaging with a wide range of Media texts.

Who is this course for?

This course is for 16-18 years olds looking to study A Levels.

What you'll learn

You will learn how language and representations are used to create meaning.

You will also explore who watches, reads and consumes different media products. You will consider how different people might respond to products differently, and why.

During this course, you will study many different media forms, such as:

  • TV and film
  • Online media
  • Advertising and marketing
  • Newspapers
  • Social media
  • Music videos
  • Radio
  • Video games

As well as learning the theory behind media, you will apply what you learn by working on your own media projects.

Course entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including both Maths & English language.

You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria.

All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence-based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference/school report.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

Assessment will comprise of a mixture of examined and non-examined assessment.
