This full-time, one-year course will teach you about the motor industry.

You will learn a wide range of relevant practical skills in our fully equipped modern workshops and also includes mechanical theory and related subjects. You can study this course at our Motor Vehicle Technology Centre at Parkway or South ÎÛÎÛÂþ»­ Skills Academy (SBSA).

You can progress to the Light Vehicle Level 2 Diploma course.

Who is this course for?

This course is for young people aged 16-18 and adults aged 19 and over who have some experience working with light vehicles, or for someone who has already completed a Level 1 Maintenance and Repair Qualification.

You should have the desire to learn and develop the skills necessary to maintain and repair motor cars.

You will need to be a committed and determined person who wants to succeed and has the ability to work as part of a team.

What you'll learn

You will study work skills and GCSEs or functional skills in English and Maths.

You will study areas like:

  • health and safety and good housekeeping in the automotive environment
  • support for job roles in the automotive environment
  • routine light vehicle maintenance
  • light vehicle chassis systems
  • light vehicles engines mechanical, lubrication and cooling.

Course entry requirements

Grade 3 GCSE in both English and Maths or Functional Skill level 1 in both English and Maths. A previous qualification in Motor Vehicle or experience in Light/heavy vehicle.

We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure that we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is delivered through half theory and half practical sessions and there will be course content which needs to be completed in your own time to support your studies.

You will also be expected to complete 30 hours of work experience during your studies which you must organise.

You will be expected to complete online assignments , tests and practical assessments in the workshop.

Future career and study opportunities

After successfully completing this course, you can move on to a Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles.

You may also seek employment as a tyre and exhaust fitter, automotive fitter, service advisor, parts advisor or warranty clerk. You could also seek a motor vehicle apprenticeship.

Additional costs

Although all the tools and equipment is supplied, you will need to provide safety boots, protective clothing, work gloves, writing equipment, calculator and paper.

From September 2023, students on all motor vehicle courses will be required to purchase and wear a uniform in College. You will receive more information about this, including cost and how to purchase, at your induction.

If you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
