Introduction to Horticulture ÎÛÎÛÂþ»­

This Course is three hours a week for six weeks to introduce the basic skills and knowledge for adults who are interested in learning how to maintain a garden or allotment.
This course is delivered at the South ÎÛÎÛÂþ»­ Skills Academy and will be a combination of classroom and practical skills development delivered within the Horticulture outside workspace.

This course is for adults aged 19+.

What you'll learn

This course will cover basic gardening skills to include preparing ground for planting, seed sowing both indoors and outdoors, planting plants outdoors.

Course entry requirements

We will invite you to a course information meeting event where you will receive information, advice and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to tour our excellent facilities and ask any questions you may have.

You will be asked to provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

You need 3 GCSEs at Grade 1 to Grade 3, including Maths and English, or a previous vocational qualification.

Some Level 1 qualifications in trade-based subjects may require a slightly higher entry requirement based on the specific content of the course.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

Classroom and workshop based learning – Lessons delivered every week by an vocationally experienced Horticulture Lecturer.

Future career and study opportunities

Progression to the Level 2 City and Guilds Horticulture Diploma, subject to demonstrating you have the correct qualifications in English and maths.
Maths and English courses for adults are available to support your progression.

Additional costs

As a ÎÛÎÛÂþ»­ student, you may incur additional costs to attend your course. For example, it is likely you may need to pay for travel and stationery.

You will need to wear suitable protective footwear and wear gardening gloves.
If you are on a limited income, you may be able to receive help from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
