English Language A Level ÎÛÎÛÂþ»Speech and writing are central to human society. On this course you will explore the ways in which we use words to establish an identity, relate to others and adopt the many roles society demands of us. You will develop your own creative and journalistic skills by writing for a variety of audiences and purposes.

Who is this course for?
This course is for 16-18 years olds with an interest in where language comes from, how it evolves and its importance in every aspect of our lives.Â
What you'll learn
In studying for Paper 1, you will explore how children acquire language and investigate textual variety in society, from Twitter hashtags to editorials in The Times. For Paper 2, you will look at language diversity and change, investigating how other languages such as Norse and Jamaican Patois has influenced and enriched the language we speak, and the evolution of regional language varieties within Britain as well as how our identities affect the language we use. Your non-examined assessment will be an independent investigation into language in action.
Course entry requirements
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including both Maths & English language.
You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure that we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.
Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria.
All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence-based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference/school report.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
You will be assessed through two examinations and one individual assessment.
Future career and study opportunities
After studying English Language A Level, you could progress to university-level study in literature, journalism, creative writing, teaching or any other subject which requires an excellent understanding of language.
Additional costs
This course is free to anyone aged 16-18. There is no formal list of additional costs. However, if you are on a limited income, you may be eligible to receive help with these costs from our Learner Support Funding Bursary.
